Movie Review - Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is set two years after the first movie. After the defeat of Megatron, the leader of the evil Decepticons and the human’s alliance with the heroic Autobots, the civil war between the two factions of the mechanical alien race was thought to be over. Now a more ancient evil stirs and once again earth is in peril thanks to the Transformers.

The fact that the sequel is set two years after the first one would have been negligible, except that clearly something movie worthy has happened within the time span. Suddenly, the Autobots grew in numbers and is now working with the military, unquestionably and with full support, to hunt down and kill Decepticons like dogs.

The Autobots are very violent in this movie. Sure, Megatron killed Jazz by snapping him in half in the first movie, but the Autobots more than makes up for it in this one. Since when does Optimus Prime, the noble hero, stabs his enemies in the face, rips their heads apart, and pulls their spark (heart) out and crushing it with his bare hands? Heck Sideswipe cuts a Decepticon in half and Bumblebee ripped the spine out of another! It looks cool, sure, but who is the bad guy here? I digress.

No one expects a good story in an action movie like this much less a story of epic science fiction scale, but bless its heart, this movie tried. The origin tale of how the Cybertronian split into two factions, how their civil war began, and how they function as a sentient alien species is pretty interesting. Too bad it is only a small part of the movie.

More robots is always a good thing and in that aspect TF:ROTF delivers. The cast of Transformers in this movie almost double that of the previous one. Nevertheless, most of the Transformers are never mentioned by name, some gets a little more than ten minutes on screen and only a select few gets any recognition. Without any introductions to who these new robots are, seeing the extended cast of Transformers in action on screen only results the feeling of frustrating confusion.

I must admit that the action sequence and the special effects in this movie are far better compared to the previous movie. Now the action can clearly be seen and the fights does not look like a giant ball of scrunched up aluminium foil rolling down some generic landscape. In some scenes, the effects are so good that I could not believe that they did not use full scale animatronics.

Whatever you opinion of the movie is, there is one flaw in the movie that everyone seems to agree on; it is too long and it is convoluted. The pacing is so bad and there are so many throw-away scenes. TF:ROTF definitely needs a trim and I bet it would have fared much better if it was more focused and if it left most of the monotony on the cutting room floor.

Personally I think saying that Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is a “fun summer popcorn movie” is a fair, yet barely acceptable, excuse. Only time will tell, as the novelty wears off, if this movie is as good as some say it is.

The Sims 3 and Transformers Toys

Why do I find it more engaging to see a virtual character achieve my hopes and dreams instead of doing it myself? Maybe it is because it takes less effort and time. What I am sure of is that I am hooked on The Sims 3.
I got the game in the mail the day after it was released from the good folks at TSB.com.my, of course. The game arrived the day after the big shipment of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen toys arrived at the toy shop I am working at. I was so busy selling the toys that I had barely any free time to play games, read up on any news or even write posts and reviews. I almost missed E3 2009!
I use to love Transformers toys. However, repaints, iterations, drops in quality and hikes in prices turned me off to it. None of the current release of transformers toys looks like a must buy to me.
Anyway, The Sims 3 is the first game, in the series, that I want to get into, because I can. I have played the first Sims, but all I wanted to do back then was build stupidly large houses and kill as many sims as I can. The Sims 2 looked intimidating. It has more expansions than any other game that I have ever seen. I felt like I should either get them all or pass, I opted for the latter.
I bought (pre-ordered) the collector’s edition of The Sims 3. It only costs a little more than the standard version, so I thought ”why not?”. By pre-ordering the game, I got a download code for a free The Sims 2 expansion pack, which I will never use, and download code for a “vintage sports car” for The Sims 3.
The collector’s edition comes with a download code for an in- game “European style sports car” and a 2GB Plumbob USB drive plus 10USD worth of SimPoints to buy stuff from the online Sim store.
I do not care much for the in-game stuff, but I really love the Plumbob USB drive. It even comes with a handy carabineer. The actual bulk of the Plumbob is the cap for the USB drive. The actual thing that you stick into a USB port is actually small. You know how removable USB drive caps tend to get lost? Well making it large and look nice sorts of solves that. It makes me want to get the upcoming Transformers USB Device Label USB drives.
Nevertheless, the 2GB storage is small. For a free Plumbob USB drive loaded with some Sims stuff, that is just fine. For a 148MYR Transforming USB drive, not so much.

Dissapointing McDonalds Thursday

I visited the local McDonalds site all excited today, hoping that they would have some collectible that coincide with the summer movies. They did, sort of...

Sigh... They didn't even bother changing the dates!

I Want McFarlane Toys To Come Back

McFarlane’s Spawn toys used to be the hottest toys out there. It has high detail, a comparatively low price and was highly articulated. However, slowly, McFarlane toys became highly detailed statues with redundant articulation. Positioned in high action poses, these figures began to warp and sag under its own weight.

But now I miss them. Comparatively, McFarlane toys are more detailed and cheaper than anything else out there. A whole set of McFarlane toys (usually about six standard figures plus one large box) cost less than a couple of Transformers figures. I love it how a set in McFarlane toys truly feels like a complete set. It rarely feels like a never ending wave.

Articulation was once a factor, back when I use to play with toys. Now I collect them, and most of my recent toys are still in its original packaging. Looking at Gashapons and anime PVC figures, which are basically statues, I think I do not mind figures with little articulation anymore. With McFarlane toys, little articulation comes at an advantage of highly detailed and beautifully painted figures.

Some old McFarlane figures use to sag and warp. I am sure they do not any more. As time passes new production methods and materials pop up. I am certain the new McFarlane figures are better than ever.

I am only guessing because I cannot find them anywhere anymore. Even the McFarlane Online Toy Store does not ship to Malaysia. I remember seeing some McFarlane figures at Toys “R” Us the last time I have been in one. However, the closest Toys “R” Us is about 200KM away.

I am currently encouraging the owner of the toy shop I am working in to take in McFarlane toys. With its low price and high quality, I believe that it will sell well in this current market. Not to mention that there is no other competition around here.

What I'm Reading: Transformers

One of the most anticipated must see movie of this summer is ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’. It is about a month away and already I have seen the novelised version of the movie on the shelf. At half the price of a standard paperback, I picked up a copy.

Currently I am reading ‘Transformers: The Veil Thereat ‘, the prequel novel to the movie. Hasbro is milking this robot cow dry and I am buying into it. Sigh...

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Preview Figures Are Here!

The preview figures for Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is here WooHoo! Sadly I am not impressed. I admit that I am not a big fan of most of the movie toys and robot designs. But, I am hoping for improvements in this second iteration.

Bumblebee looks like he has just discovered sugar, or some potent robot drug, or just been hit in the "crack shaft". His eyes are huge, not anime huge, butGuinness world of record bulging huge, and blue. I am also a bit disappointed that his right arm is permanently a weapon. Maybe it's too much to ask from a Deluxe figure.

Soundwave looks out of this world and far removed from the “robots in disguise” mantra of the Transformers. Because of that, I think the designers took some liberties with its design and transformation. Touted as a Triple Changer, the difference between his “satellite mode” and his “jet mode” are negligible.

Nevertheless, I am impressed by the improved colours and detailing on these figures. Still, it is nothing a Gunpla liner maker, cannot improve. Honestly, it makes me more excited for the Takara Tomy iteration of the toys instead.
